Vice President Kamala Harris faced backlash on social media after sharing a Thanksgiving photo of her and second husband Doug Emhoff posing next to a gas stove. This comes despite the Biden administration’s earlier proposal advocating for a ban on gas stoves. Critics, including Republican lawmakers, pointed out the apparent contradiction.
The controversy began when Harris posted the photo on X with the caption, “From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.” However, several conservatives quickly noticed the gas stove in the background and questioned the Vice President’s support for the ban. Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., tweeted, “Is that a gas stove?” Former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and America First activist Laura Loomer also joined in on the criticism.
The Biden administration had previously expressed intentions to ban gas stoves due to health concerns raised by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s top leader, Richard Trumka Jr. Trumka stated that “a ban on gas stoves is on the table” and emphasized the potential hazards associated with them. However, it was later clarified that the ban would only apply to new products and not existing stoves.
Despite this clarification, the Department of Energy (DOE) proposed new energy efficiency standards for gas stoves, which would make it difficult for most stoves currently on the market to meet the requirements. In response, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives approved an amendment in March, supported by several Democrats, to prevent the implementation of these strict regulations. The amendment received bipartisan support, with 29 Democrats voting with the GOP.
It is worth noting that approximately 38% of American households, or roughly 40 million, rely on natural gas for cooking. The White House and the vice president’s office did not provide any comments on the matter.
Critics argue that Harris’s Thanksgiving photo with a gas stove contradicts the Biden administration’s stance on banning gas stoves. Republicans have seized this opportunity to highlight what they perceive as hypocrisy within the Democratic Party. However, supporters of the ban argue that the proposed measures are necessary for public health and environmental reasons.
