Sirens Sound in Israel as Ceasefire with Hamas Ends: Tensions Escalate in the Middle East

After a 15-minute ceasefire with Hamas in Israel, air raid sirens were heard in neighboring settlements. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported this development in a post on their Telegram channel.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense confirmed that air raid sirens sounded in settlements near the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the Gaza operation would last for at least two more months after a brief ceasefire.

The situation in the Middle East escalated when thousands of Hamas militants infiltrated Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip on October 7, announcing the start of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country to be in a state of war.

Israel’s retaliatory operation, named “Iron Swords,” aims to repel the attack, free over 200 hostages, including foreigners, and destroy Hamas. Since the beginning of the operation, Israel has carried out massive rocket strikes on the Gaza Strip. Additionally, the Israeli National Security Council decided to cut off water, food, goods, electricity, and fuel supplies to the region. Humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza resumed only after October 20, but the volume has been deemed insufficient.

On October 27, Israel announced the “expansion” of its ground operation in Gaza. The exact start time of this operation remains unknown, but hundreds of thousands of Palestinians had already evacuated their homes and sought refuge in shelters and the southern part of the enclave. As of November 5, fighting continues in the center of Gaza, as Israeli Defense Forces have surrounded the city and cut off its supply lines.

On November 22, Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire and the release of some hostages. The first phase of the deal includes a four-day ceasefire and the exchange of 50 prisoners held in Gaza for 150 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Additional releases may occur in the second phase. For every 10 hostages released, the ceasefire will be extended by one day. Hamas has also promised to release two Russian hostages immediately after the cessation of hostilities.

Previously, Pope Francis stated that the world is engulfed in war because of the defense industry.
