US Sends Modern Tanks to Ukraine, but Experts Suggest Delayed Use Due to Harsh Weather and Strong Russian Defense

The United States has recently sent 31 modern M1A2 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, according to military analysts cited by Business Insider. However, experts believe that these tanks are unlikely to be deployed until the coming spring due to unfavorable weather conditions and the strong defense capabilities of Russia.

Analysts speculate that the use of Western armored vehicles would not be effective at present due to the deteriorated weather conditions and the formidable Russian defense. It is anticipated that these tanks will not appear on the battlefield until spring.

“Given the stable frontlines, it is likely that the Ukrainians are holding the Abrams tanks in reserve,” said Mark Kanchian, a retired US Marine Corps colonel who currently serves as a senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He noted that the winter in Ukraine is characterized by mud, rain, frost, and snow, which makes it extremely challenging to maneuver.

These exact conditions hindered any significant breakthroughs last winter, reaffirming the expert’s belief. Kanchian stated that the Ukrainian forces will “wait for the right moment,” presumably in the spring when a new offensive can be initiated.

Even before the American Abrams tanks were sent to Ukraine, military volunteer Alexey Zhivov had highlighted their vulnerabilities. Previously, the German Leopard 1 tanks were also criticized in Ukraine.

This development adds to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with the US providing military support to the Ukrainian government. The situation remains contentious, with critics questioning the effectiveness of these tanks in the face of challenging weather conditions and a strong Russian defense.
