Surge in Migrant Apprehensions on Northern Border Raises Concerns

In a surprising development, the often-overlooked northern border of the United States has experienced a staggering 550% increase in migrant apprehensions over the past fiscal year. The latest statistics highlight the growing numbers that border officials are grappling with. Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia revealed that between October 2022 and the end of September, agents apprehended a total of 6,925 migrants. What’s even more alarming is that these migrants hail from 79 different countries, with the top five being Mexico, India, Venezuela, Haiti, and Romania.

The Swanton Sector, which covers the borders of New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont with Canada, witnessed just over 1,000 Border Patrol apprehensions in all of FY 2022 and a mere 365 in FY 2021. This surge in migration is not limited to the northern border alone but is part of a broader trend seen at both the northern and southern borders of the country. However, it is important to note that the numbers at the southern border far surpass those observed at the northern border, with over 2.4 million encounters reported.

One significant factor contributing to the increase in migrant crossings at the northern border is the lack of staffing and resources. As officials and lawmakers have pointed out, vast stretches of the northern border, spanning over 5,000 miles and hosting only 115 ports of entry, remain largely unstaffed in comparison to the southern border.

Earlier this year, Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia appealed for volunteers in response to the surges, particularly among Mexican migrants lacking legal documentation. “Due to the increased numbers, stations are task saturated with processing large groups, which has contributed to get-away events, pedestrian and vehicle incursions,” he stated in February.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Republicans in Congress have emphasized the need for greater attention to be given to the northern border. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., co-chair of the Northern Border Security Caucus, highlighted the risks associated with drug smuggling and other potential threats that could infiltrate the country through this vulnerable region. He expressed concern that the lack of physical barriers makes it relatively easy for individuals to cross without detection.

The Biden administration has also acknowledged the importance of securing the northern border in its overall security plans. Earlier this year, a new border deal was announced with Canada, aimed at facilitating the return of migrants attempting to cross illegally between ports of entry into either country. This updated agreement builds upon the 2004 Safe Third Country Agreement, which did not address the issue of illegal immigration.

As the surge in migrant apprehensions on the northern border continues to raise concerns, it is clear that immediate action is needed to address staffing shortages and strengthen border security measures. The Biden administration, along with lawmakers and officials, must work together to find comprehensive solutions that protect the integrity of the country’s borders while ensuring the safety and well-being of both migrants and citizens alike.
