In a social media post, Hilton thanked the 10 Republican senators who co-sponsored the #StopInstitutionalChildAbuseAct, emphasizing her appreciation during the holiday season. The Republican senators mentioned by Hilton include John Cornyn, Shelley Capito, Katie Britt, Thom Tillis, Tommy Tuberville, Susan Collins, Markwayne Mullin, Cynthia Lummis, Roger Marshall, and Pete Ricketts.
The bipartisan bill, authored by Cornyn, Tuberville, Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Rep. Earl Carter, R-Ga., was introduced on April 27. Its primary goal is to establish stronger oversight for residential youth treatment programs to identify and prevent child abuse. Currently, the bill is being reviewed by the committee.
Hilton’s personal connection to this issue stems from her own traumatic experience. In a New York Times video op-ed series last year, she revealed that she was a victim of sexual abuse during her teenage years at a boarding school in Utah. Hilton described her ordeal as a “parent-approved kidnapping,” where she was forcibly taken from her home to a congregate-care facility. She further disclosed that she was subjected to medical exams by staff members, which she later recognized as sexual abuse.
Paris Hilton has been a dedicated advocate for the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act since its inception. She has been actively raising awareness about the bill and fighting for the rights of children who come from families unable to support them or those involved in the juvenile justice and foster care systems.
