Surge in Chinese Nationals and Afghans at US-Mexico Border Raises National Security Concerns

The US-Mexico border is facing an unprecedented migrant crisis that extends beyond the Western Hemisphere. Recent data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources reveals a surge in encounters with Chinese nationals and Afghans, along with individuals from Syria, Iran, and Uzbekistan. This influx of migrants has raised significant national security concerns, especially in light of the recent terror attack on Israel.

Since the beginning of the fiscal year, over 6,500 Chinese nationals and 700 Afghans have been encountered at the US-Mexico border. Additionally, there have been over 140 encounters from Syria, over 80 from Iran, and over 1,500 from Uzbekistan. These numbers highlight the global scope of the migrant crisis and the potential national security threat it poses.

The situation becomes even more alarming when considering the “gotaways” – migrants who evade Border Patrol apprehension. In October alone, there were an average of over 1,000 “gotaways” per day. This means that migrants are successfully evading detection and entering the United States through alternative routes.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas informed lawmakers that there had been approximately 600,000 “gotaways” in fiscal year 2023. While officials claim that apprehension rates have remained steady compared to the prior administration, the number of “gotaways” still raises concerns about border security.

The FBI has expressed great concern over the situation at the border. FBI Director Christopher Wray stated that individuals crossing the border without proper documentation and background checks pose a significant threat to national security. The FBI is actively using its joint terrorism task forces to address this issue.

The DHS’s FY 24 threat assessment warned of an increasing number of individuals on watch lists attempting to enter the United States. The report stated that terrorists and criminal actors may exploit the elevated flow of migrants and the complex security environment at the border. This further emphasizes the need for enhanced screening and vetting processes.

The US government and law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to prevent individuals who pose a national security or public safety risk from entering the country. Screening efforts include biographic and biometric checks to detect potential threats. However, the sheer volume of encounters and the complexity of the security environment present significant challenges.

The situation at the US-Mexico border requires immediate attention and comprehensive solutions. The surge in Chinese nationals and Afghans, along with individuals from other countries, highlights the need for enhanced border security measures. The US government must prioritize the safety and security of its citizens while also considering the global implications of the migrant crisis.
