Reactor Launch for Cruiser ‘Admiral Nakhimov’ Planned for Late Autumn, Source Reports

According to a source, the reactors of the heavy nuclear cruiser ‘Admiral Nakhimov’, currently undergoing repairs and modernization at Sevmash, are expected to be launched at the end of this autumn. The source, cited by TASS, stated that the physical launch of the two reactors may take place in the third decade of November. However, it should be noted that there is no official confirmation of this information available to journalists.

On September 14, it was reported that the physical launch of the ‘Admiral Nakhimov’ cruiser’s reactors could occur in autumn 2023. It was emphasized that the activation of the ship’s power plants would mark the beginning of comprehensive tests in various modes, allowing conclusions to be drawn about their functionality and readiness for operation.

A month earlier, the head of Sevmash, Mikhail Budnichenko, announced that the ‘Admiral Nakhimov’ would undergo sea trials in May 2024.

The heavy nuclear missile cruiser ‘Admiral Nakhimov’, launched in 1986, was sent for repairs and modernization at the Sevmash plant in Severodvinsk in 1999. The plan was to install modern digital systems that would bring the cruiser’s radio electronics to a contemporary level, as well as new missile installations. It was originally expected that the cruiser would return to service by 2020.

In late August, it was reported that the reconstruction cost of the cruiser exceeded 200 billion rubles.

Earlier, the expected timeline for the return of the aircraft carrier ‘Admiral Kuznetsov’ to the Navy’s fleet became known.
