President Erdogan Requests Germany to Lift Ban on Fighter Jet Sales

During his visit to Berlin, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan may make a request to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to lift the ban on the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, according to Bloomberg. However, German authorities are unlikely to take such a step.

The article highlights that Turkey may ask Germany, which is part of the Eurofighter consortium along with Spain, the United Kingdom, and Italy, to provide at least 20 combat aircraft, with the possibility of doubling that number in the future.

Turkish and German officials informed the agency that Ankara needs the jets to modernize its “outdated air force” and as a response to Greece’s purchase of French Dassault Rafale aircraft. However, according to sources, Germany is unlikely to make any concessions due to the strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In late September, it was revealed that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak personally urged the German Chancellor to grant permission for the export of Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Saudi Arabia.

Previously, Turkey had contemplated leaving NATO.
