Biden Administration Confirms Authority to Revoke Visas of Pro-Hamas Individuals Living in the US, Spurring Calls for Deportation by Republicans

In the latest development concerning the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the Biden administration has confirmed its authority to revoke visas of foreign nationals residing in the United States who support terrorist groups such as Hamas. This announcement comes as Republicans urge the government to take a tougher stance on pro-Hamas foreigners. The State Department, in a letter to Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, affirmed that Hamas is a designated foreign terrorist organization and that the department has the power to revoke visas. The agency stated, “The Department of State also has broad authority under the [Immigration and Nationality Act] to revoke visas… We exercise the authority when there is information or evidence indicating a visa holder may be ineligible for a U.S. visa.” The State Department further emphasized that it takes immediate action, including visa revocation, when it receives derogatory information indicating ineligibility.

The confirmation of visa revocation authority by the State Department has prompted Republican lawmakers to call for the deportation of pro-Hamas student visa holders, stating that they are not welcome in the United States. Thousands of anti-Israel protestors recently gathered in Washington, DC, demanding an end to the Israel-Hamas war. Senator Rubio, in response to the State Department’s announcement, stated, “State Department confirms they have the power to revoke the visas of Hamas supporters and deport them. Now they need to do it.” The State Department spokesperson has clarified that visa revocation is exercised if there is reason to suspect that an individual has provided material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

While the Department of State maintains that visa records are confidential under U.S. law and cannot discuss specific visa cases, it assures that national security is its top priority when adjudicating visa applications. This confirmation aligns the Biden administration with many Republicans who have called for visa revocation if foreign nationals have expressed pro-Hamas views. The issue has gained attention in the aftermath of the Hamas terror attacks on Israel, leading some lawmakers to advocate for stricter immigration restrictions.

Last month, nineteen lawmakers wrote to the administration, specifically urging the revocation of student visas for individuals involved in protests that glorify the terror group. In addition, Senator Rubio has led a resolution calling for the government to revoke visas and initiate deportation proceedings for any foreign national endorsing or espousing the terrorist activities of Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, or other terrorist groups.

This announcement comes as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) faces criticism for not expelling anti-Israel student protesters due to “visa issues.” The university’s administrators acknowledged that visa complications prevented them from taking further action against the protesters.

In conclusion, the Biden administration’s affirmation of its authority to revoke visas of pro-Hamas individuals residing in the United States has ignited calls for deportation by Republican lawmakers. This move aligns the administration with many Republicans who seek stricter immigration measures in response to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
