Lee Greenwood, the Grammy award-winning country music legend known for his iconic song “God Bless the U.S.A.,” has confirmed that he will be retiring from the music industry after more than four decades. In an interview with Brilyn Hollyhand, the editor-in-chief of The Truth Gazette and host of “The Brilyn Hollyhand Show” podcast, Greenwood announced that his 2024 tour will be his last.
During the interview, Hollyhand asked Greenwood about the rumors of his retirement, to which he responded, “It’s not just a rumor. It will be my last year to tour.” The exact location of his final performance is yet to be determined. Unlike other artists who often come out of retirement, Greenwood assured fans that this will be a definitive farewell.
At 81 years old, Greenwood cited his age and health issues as factors contributing to his decision. He mentioned having undergone surgeries and having titanium knees and a titanium cage in his back with 10 screws. Additionally, he expressed a desire to spend more time with his family, particularly his wife of 31 years, Kimberly Payne, and his two sons, who are currently in college.
Expressing gratitude to his fans for their unwavering support throughout his career, Greenwood acknowledged that they have continued to attend his shows despite hearing the same songs for 40 years. Billboard Magazine recognized him as one of the top 100 artists of all time, and he gained popularity in the 1980s with hits such as “It Turns Me Inside Out,” “Ring on Her Finger, Time on Her Hand,” and “Somebody’s Gonna Love You.” However, it was his patriotic anthem “God Bless the U.S.A.” that solidified his status as a beloved American artist.
Greenwood’s iconic song has been embraced by politicians and used in various settings. Former President Donald Trump frequently played it at his campaign rallies and White House events. It was even featured in a film about former President Ronald Reagan shown at the Republican National Convention. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Greenwood was appointed by former President George W. Bush to the National Council on the Arts in 2008.
However, in 2021, Greenwood was replaced on the board of trustees at the Kennedy Center by President Biden’s administration. Greenwood expressed shock and disappointment about the decision, emphasizing that his song is meant to unite all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.
