A robbery attempt at one of Manhattan’s major subway stations was thwarted by a brave bystander who fired a shot, saving a 40-year-old woman from being victimized. The incident took place at the busy 49th Street subway station near Rockefeller Center around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is now seeking the public’s help in identifying the courageous individual involved in what authorities are describing as a “reckless endangerment incident.”
According to authorities, the unidentified bystander overheard the would-be mugger demanding money from the woman and threatening to steal her purse. In response, the bystander fired a single shot, causing the robbery suspect to flee. The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Matthew Roesch, was later apprehended by the police. It is worth noting that Roesch had been previously arrested in September.
The unidentified hero left the scene on foot, and as of Wednesday morning, his whereabouts remain unknown. The NYPD has released surveillance footage of the incident in hopes of gathering information about the man. Described as a light-skinned man between 35 and 45 years old, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, and weighing around 230 pounds, he was seen wearing a green T-shirt, black shorts, black sneakers, and white socks. He was carrying a green backpack and a reusable shopping bag from B&H, a popular camera store.
Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. However, the event highlights the growing concern of vigilantism in New York City. Ralph Cilento, a retired lieutenant commander of detectives at the NYPD and an adjunct professor of police science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, had previously predicted an increase in vigilante actions.
