According to reports, Israeli troops have been seen setting up positions and posts in buildings near Gaza, while thousands of Palestinians walk together in large groups for safety. The Israeli army estimates that only about 100,000 people remain in the northern Gaza Strip, significantly less than the previous population of one million. Israel has stated that its objective is to target Hamas infrastructure and weapons facilities, as well as any Hamas fighters they encounter.
The situation in Gaza is dire, as Palestinians state that no corner of the strip is safe from Israeli bombardment. More than 70 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, including vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Many have had to cross Israeli checkpoints to reach safer areas, witnessing arrests by Israeli forces along the way.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is exacerbated by the fact that the majority of its population are refugees, with ancestral ties to the homes they were forcibly expelled from during the founding of Israel in 1948. The lack of basic necessities such as water, electricity, and flour has pushed many to flee in search of better conditions for themselves and their families.
Witnesses have reported the devastating impact of Israeli air strikes, with entire blocks of houses being destroyed and civilians, including the elderly, killed. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, more than 10,569 people, including 4,324 children, have been killed in Israel’s relentless bombardment. The war broke out on October 7 when Hamas launched attacks on southern Israel, resulting in significant casualties.
