According to information from Sky News, Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Galant, has stated that the leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, is currently surrounded in his bunker.
The location of the bunker is not specified. Galant noted that Sinwar is cut off from his supporters and promised that the militant leader will be eliminated.
For the first time in decades, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are conducting an operation in the central area of the Gaza Strip. Galant explained that Hamas strongholds are being stormed from all sides with coordination from naval and aerial forces.
The situation in the Middle East has escalated following the infiltration of thousands of Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7th. Over two hundred hostages were taken.
On that day, Hamas launched thousands of rockets into Israeli territory and announced the beginning of the “Flood of Al-Aqsa” operation. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country to be in a state of war.
The IDF’s counter-operation has been named “Iron Swords,” with the aim of destroying Hamas. The Israeli Air Force has carried out strikes on hundreds of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, and the Israeli National Security Council has decided to halt the supply of water, food, goods, electricity, and fuel to the area. On October 13th, Israel informed the United Nations that 1.1 million Palestinians must evacuate to the south of Gaza within 24 hours in anticipation of a ground operation.
Earlier, Prime Minister Netanyahu outlined Israel’s objectives in the war against Hamas.
