While the source of transmission at the casino has not been identified, health officials believe that TB may have spread among those who visited the establishment between 2018 and 2023.
Dr. Meera Sreenivasan, a health official, emphasized the importance of getting tested for TB, even if individuals do not feel sick. TB can remain dormant within a person for years without showing any symptoms. However, it can cause serious illness if left untreated. The disease is treatable and curable with medication, especially when detected early.
Symptoms of active tuberculosis include persistent or bloody cough, unexpected weight loss, night sweats, and fatigue. CCH explains that TB spreads when an infected person coughs or exhales droplets containing the bacteria, typically in enclosed spaces over an extended period.
Some casino patrons expressed surprise and concern upon hearing the news, as they had not been informed about the tuberculosis cases prior to their visit. They mentioned the absence of warning signs or notices about the disease within the establishment. However, despite the news, the casino remains open and continues to receive customers.
The California Grand Casino released a statement assuring the public that none of the linked TB cases involve their staff, and none of the cases are currently contagious. They are working closely with Contra Costa Health on notifications and testing to prioritize public health and safety.
