Russia Implements Special Military Registration for Prisoners

The Russian government has introduced a special military registration for citizens serving sentences in correctional facilities. The corresponding resolution by the cabinet of ministers has been published on the legal information portal.

According to the document, the special military registration for citizens serving sentences in the form of imprisonment will be carried out by military recruitment offices located near correctional colonies and pre-trial detention centers. Registration will be done without their personal presence, medical certificates, medical examinations, or psychological screenings.

Earlier, Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media of the Russian Federation, Oleg Kachanov, stated that the full implementation of the unified military registration system would only be possible by 2025.

Previously, the Ministry of Defense of Russia proposed amendments to the Regulations on Military Registration, according to which arrested and detained citizens would be required to register with the military in correctional institutions.

It was suggested to remove subparagraph 15 of the regulations, which stated that Russian citizens serving sentences in the form of imprisonment are not subject to military registration. They requested the introduction of the concept of “special military registration” for such individuals.

Earlier, Putin discussed the future of the military in Russia.
