Two Venezuelan migrants residing in Chicago were charged with stealing nearly $3,000 in merchandise from a suburban Macy’s on Tuesday, raising concerns about an increase in migrant criminal activity in the city. Luis Mendez-Gomez, 28, and Frank Montez-Davila, 23, were apprehended by Oak Brook police officers after they were seen leaving the store carrying a “happy birthday” bag and a backpack filled with stolen items. The merchandise, which included high-end fragrances and a pair of pants, had an approximate total value of $2,832.50.
According to prosecutors, Mendez-Gomez and Montez-Davila entered the Macy’s store together, with Mendez-Gomez concealing the bag and backpack under his shirt. Once inside, they filled the bags with the stolen items before leaving the store without paying. The men were charged with burglary and retail theft, and Mendez-Gomez was additionally cited for driving without a valid driver’s license.
This incident follows the recent arrest of two other Venezuelan migrants who were caught stealing over $1,700 worth of goods from the same store. Abel Barrios-Estava and Rafael Mata-Torres, who also resided in Chicago, were released on the condition that they wear electronic monitoring devices.
The consecutive arrests of Venezuelan migrants for theft have raised concerns among authorities about the rise in criminal activity within the migrant community in Chicago. Oak Brook Deputy Chief of Police Reid Foltyniewicz emphasized the importance of combating organized retail crime and protecting the community.
