Body Found in Sunken Meadow State Park Identified as Recent Homicide Victim, Unrelated to Gilgo Beach Serial Killer

A body found in Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island has been identified as 20-year-old Yoneli Abimael Ramos Moreno, according to New York State Police. The discovery of human remains in the park had sparked speculation and rumors about a potential connection to the Gilgo Beach serial killer. However, authorities have confirmed that there is no link between Moreno’s murder and the suspect Rex Heuermann, who has been in jail since his arrest in July.

Moreno’s body was found in a wooded area of the state park in Smithtown, about 24 miles north of Heuermann’s home in Massapequa Park. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office and law enforcement quickly identified the victim and ruled out Heuermann as a suspect. Moreno’s last known address is in Brentwood, New York.

Sunken Meadow State Park, where the body was found, is a popular recreational area along Long Island’s north shore. It offers amenities such as a golf course, beaches, hiking trails, and spots for various outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, the criminal case against Rex Heuermann, who is accused of being the Gilgo Beach serial killer, is ongoing. He has been charged with three of the “Gilgo Beach 4” murders, but has not been charged in the death of Melissa Barthelemy. Law enforcement and prosecutors consider him the prime suspect in her case.

The Gilgo Beach case involves the discovery of multiple victims, mostly female sex workers, between December 2010 and April 2011. While Heuermann has not been connected to the other victims, theories of a second serial killer, known as the “Manorville Butcher,” have emerged due to the presence of additional remains found in the same area during the same time period.

The investigation into Moreno’s murder is ongoing, and law enforcement is urging anyone with information to come forward. Those with information can call (631) 756-3300.
