In a recent development, Republican Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie has come under fire for announcing his decision to vote against a $14.3 billion aid package for Israel. This move has sparked criticism from a pro-Israel group and has led to a heated debate within Congress. Massie argues that such a substantial amount of aid would essentially translate into an average of $100 taken from every working individual in the United States, owing to inflation and taxes.
The aid package, which is supported by a majority of House Republicans, aims to allocate $1.2 billion for the development of the Iron Beam defense system and $4 billion for Israel’s Iron Dome and David’s Sling defense systems. However, Massie’s opposition to the resolution defending Israel’s right to defend itself and condemning Hamas has drawn attention to his alignment with nine progressive Democrats, including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jamaal Bowman, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar.
Responding to criticism from the pro-Israel group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Massie accused them of misrepresenting his intent and the resolution he voted against. He emphasized his condemnation of Hamas’ terror attack against Israel but explained that he opposed the resolution due to its call for sanctions and the assertion of the necessity of foreign aid commitments. Massie boldly stated, “AIPAC always gets mad when I put America first. I won’t be voting for their $14+ billion shakedown of American taxpayers either.”
The AIPAC countered by emphasizing the importance of Israel’s security and the need for support. Ocasio-Cortez also joined the discussion, criticizing AIPAC for endorsing individuals involved in the January 6th insurrection and accusing them of being an extremist organization that destabilizes US democracy, while also highlighting their alleged racist and bigoted tendencies.
It is worth noting that the funding for the Israel aid bill would be obtained through cuts to Internal Revenue Service funding, as allocated through the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Democrats last year. The House Rules Committee is set to discuss the aid bill on Wednesday.
