Although one person remains in critical condition, her health is improving. However, the focus has now shifted to a 24-year-old social worker, Payton Shires, who was charged with having sex with a 13-year-old boy she was assigned to counsel. Recent developments reveal that Shires is now facing additional charges for allegedly attempting to intimidate the boy’s family.
During a court hearing, it was reported that Shires showed up at the boy’s home with a gun and threatened to kill herself. She also blamed the family for “ruining her life.” Shires had previously admitted to the sexual relationship during a conversation involving herself, the boy’s mother, and the police. The incident led to her arrest on October 6.
Shires was employed by the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP), an organization that provides counseling and support for families involved in the foster care system. It is unclear when she ceased working for the organization. The boy’s mother contacted the police after discovering suspicious text messages on her son’s phone from Shires. Subsequent investigation revealed a video of the teen and Shires engaged in sexual conduct, along with the teen’s admission of multiple encounters with Shires in September.
Shires has been charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and is currently held on a $500,000 bond. Due to the new charges of intimidating a witness, her bond has been revoked, and she is expected to remain in custody until her next court appearance on November 6.
