In a recent video statement, Abu Obeida, a representative of the military wing of the radical Hamas movement, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, called for the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages held by the organization. This development comes as tensions continue to escalate between Israel and Palestine.
Obeida emphasized that the release of the enemy’s captives could only be achieved by freeing all Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. He expressed Hamas’ readiness to resolve the hostage issue immediately if the Israeli side is willing. The movement is also willing to carry out the exchange in several stages, offering Israel the opportunity to “divide this dossier,” according to Obeida.
Earlier, Musa Abu Marzouk, a member of Hamas’ political bureau and head of its external relations department, stated that the Palestinian movement was not prepared to release Israeli soldiers taken captive during combat. He highlighted the need for separate negotiations to secure the soldiers’ release.
On October 28th, Alexander Ben Zvi, the Israeli ambassador to Russia, insisted that Hamas should release the hostages unconditionally and without any demands. The diplomat specifically mentioned women and children being held captive, condemning their detention as a war crime.
Previously, Hamas had stated that it would release foreign hostages “when circumstances allow.”
