Maine Mass Shooting Suspect Found Dead, State Officials Express Relief and Gratitude

Maine authorities have provided an update on the search for the suspect in the recent mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine. U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King of Maine expressed relief after law enforcement discovered the suspect, Robert Card, dead on Friday. Card, who was the primary suspect in the mass shooting that took place at Schemengees Bar and Grille and the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley, had taken the lives of 18 people and injured 13 others. His body was found near a dumpster at a Lisbon recycling plant where he once worked, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In response to the news, Republican Senator Collins commended the brave first responders who worked tirelessly to find the killer. She also shared that President Biden had informed her of the suspect’s discovery and expressed appreciation for the efforts made by law enforcement. Senator King, an Independent, expressed his gratitude for the law enforcement and first responders who worked to find the suspect, stating that the people of Maine can now breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Governor Janet Mills, a Democrat, was also praised for her steadfast leadership during this difficult time. Collins thanked the governor as well as the healthcare workers, city officials, and the people of Maine who came together in the aftermath of the attack. She acknowledged the shock, pain, and anger felt by the families of the victims and those injured, offering her hope that they can find solace and strength in knowing that they are supported by the entire nation.

The manhunt for Card involved hundreds of law enforcement officers, including the FBI, SWAT, and the BORTAC Border Patrol unit. The suspect was considered armed and dangerous, making the search a high-priority operation. Governor Mills acknowledged the tireless efforts of law enforcement and expressed her gratitude for their dedication.

The victims of the mass shooting were identified as Ronald Morin, Peyton Brewer Ross, Joshua Seal, Brian MacFarlane, Joseph Lawrence Walker, Arthur Fred Strout, Maxx Hathaway, Stephen Vozella, Thomas Ryan Conrad, Michael R. Deslauriers II, Jason Adam Walker, Tricia Asselin, William Young, Aaron Young, Robert Violette, Lucille Violette, William Frank Brackett, and Keith Macneir.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden expressed relief that the threat has ended and called for support and care for the families affected by the tragedy. Rep. Chellie Pingree also expressed her gratitude to all the individuals involved in responding to the incident and called for an end to gun violence.

In light of this tragic event, Rep. Golden has reversed his stance on gun ownership and now supports a ban on “assault” weapons.

The state of Maine and its residents are now focused on mourning the loss of life and honoring the memory of the victims. They are determined to come together as a community and work towards healing and putting an end to the gun violence epidemic.
