The Tisch family, disturbed by acts of antisemitism on campus, aimed to support the posters and make the Jewish students feel less isolated. Pro-Israel counter-protestors also gathered, chanting across a line of police officers at a vigil organized by NYU students in support of Palestinians. The Tisch family ensured that their massive slideshow was projected from inside the NYU Tisch School of the Arts building to the university’s library façade on West 4th Street.
NYU was unaware of this demonstration, and they did not provide any comment on the matter. Meanwhile, a crowd of approximately 70 organizers congregated in Washington Square Park, singing in Hebrew and waving Israeli flags. The video projection displayed the names and photos of the youngest victims, including a 9-month-old baby and his 4-year-old brother, who were among the 100 Israelis kidnapped by Hamas during their surprise attack on Israel on October 7. This slideshow mirrored the posters that have been displayed and torn down in cities across the nation, including NYU’s campus.
The rise of pro-Hamas protests and the subsequent targeting of Jewish students have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the Jewish community. With tensions escalating between Israel and Hamas, it is imperative to address the impact these conflicts have on students and ensure their protection.
