India is taking steps to strengthen its border security by implementing a drone surveillance system along its borders with Pakistan and China. The Times of India reports that the Ministry of Defense has held a meeting with representatives from six drone manufacturing companies to discuss the procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for military use in defending the border. The contract for the drone supply is expected to be announced in November.
The development of the surveillance system is estimated to take 18 months, with projected costs reaching up to $500 million. The Indian Defense Ministry plans to utilize solar-powered drones, which are capable of remaining airborne for extended periods of time.
This initiative comes after the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, Ely Ratner, announced that American and Indian experts will collaborate on the development of drones. Ratner emphasized that India aims to diversify its weaponry and enhance its defense industry.
