Maryland Judge’s Murder Suspect Found Dead After Weeklong Manhunt

Pedro Argote, the suspect in the shooting death of Maryland Circuit Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson, has been found dead after a weeklong manhunt. The fugitive’s body was discovered in a heavily wooded area near Williamsport, Maryland. The location is about one mile away from where Argote had abandoned his vehicle after the killing. The cause and time of death will be determined through an autopsy in Baltimore.

Judge Andrew Wilkinson was shot and killed on October 19, just a day after granting Argote’s wife a divorce and sole custody of their four children. During the custody hearing, Wilkinson heard harrowing testimony about the abuse inflicted by Argote on his family for years. Argote did not appear in court, claiming he had a headache. His wife tearfully testified about the control and violence he had subjected her to, including stuffing a towel in their baby’s mouth. Wilkinson’s ruling concluded that Argote was an unfit parent, citing the extensive abuse and isolation he had imposed on his family.

Following the murder, the U.S. Marshals Service launched a nationwide search for Argote. However, he was found dead before he could be apprehended. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed whether a weapon was found near Argote’s body.

Sheriff Brian Albert expressed relief that Argote’s death provided some closure to Wilkinson’s family. The murder had deeply affected them, and they can now find solace in knowing that the suspect is no longer at large. The sheriff also mentioned that discussions would be held about improving security measures to protect judges.

The divorce and custody hearing that led to Wilkinson’s murder was a protracted and emotionally charged process. It spanned several days and resulted in Wilkinson granting sole custody to Argote’s wife while prohibiting any contact between Argote and his children. The judge’s ruling was aimed at safeguarding the well-being of the children, considering the extent of abuse and control inflicted by Argote.

This tragic incident highlights the risks faced by judges and the need for enhanced security measures within the judicial system. The murder of Judge Wilkinson serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers that judges and court officials may encounter while carrying out their duties.

The investigation into Pedro Argote’s death and the circumstances surrounding Judge Wilkinson’s murder continue. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
