In a recent article published by The New York Times, commentator Thomas Friedman highlights Israel’s ongoing battle on multiple fronts and emphasizes the need for support from its allies to secure victory.
Friedman identifies various adversaries that Israel is currently facing, including non-governmental organizations, social media platforms, ideological movements, communities on the West Bank, and Israeli political forces. He further lists Hamas, Hezbollah in Lebanon, pro-Iranian groups in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, as well as Iran itself, as significant challengers to Israel’s security.
According to the observer, Israel can only achieve victory if it can forge a global alliance with the United States in support of the Jewish state. However, he acknowledges that Israel’s settlement policies in recent decades have complicated its task of forming such an alliance.
Earlier, the Israeli ambassador stated that a ground operation in the Gaza Strip would commence unexpectedly.
On October 7, Hamas forces launched thousands of rockets into Israeli territory, marking the beginning of the “Flood of Al-Aqsa” operation. Thousands of militants infiltrated Israeli territory, seizing dozens of military vehicles and over a hundred hostages. Against this backdrop, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the country was in a state of war.
Dubbed “Swords of Iron,” the Israeli Defense Forces’ retaliatory operation aims to destroy Hamas. The Israeli Air Force has conducted strikes on hundreds of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, while the Israeli National Security Council has decided to halt the supply of water, food, goods, electricity, and fuel to the region. On October 13, Israel informed the United Nations that 1.1 million Palestinians must evacuate to the south of Gaza within 24 hours in anticipation of a ground operation.
Previously, Hamas stated that it would release foreign hostages “when circumstances allow.”
