A man convicted of a deadly shooting spree in southern Indiana has been sentenced to 240 years in prison. Cherok Ameer Douglass, of New Albany, was found guilty of two counts of murder, attempted murder, and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. The incident, which took place in April 2022, resulted in the deaths of his wife, Brandee Kay Douglass, and a bystander, Lorin M. Yelle.
Prosecutors revealed that there was no known connection between Yelle and the Douglass couple. Yelle, who was a customer at a gas station, was shot while walking to his vehicle. After the shooting, Douglass fled the scene and took a restaurant owner, Winnie Wen, as a hostage. Wen sustained injuries when she fell from Douglass’ vehicle during a police chase.
The investigation into the mass shooting in Maine continues as residents remain in lockdown. During the sentencing hearing, Douglass expressed his intention to appeal the jury’s verdict. He admitted to being under the influence of heroin and methamphetamine on the day of his arrest but claimed to have no recollection of the events that transpired. Despite his apology to the victims’ families, Douglass received the maximum sentence from Floyd Superior Court Judge Carrie Stiller, who described his crimes as “the worst of the worst.”
In a separate incident, a Florida duo is alleged to have repeatedly stabbed a man, thrown him over a bridge, stolen his car, and set it on fire. Authorities are investigating the brutal attack.
