West Maui in Hawaii is preparing to welcome back tourists as early as next month, following the devastating wildfires that occurred in August. Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen has announced that the majority of West Maui, with the exception of burned-out sections of historic Lahaina, will reopen to tourism on November 1. This decision comes after consultations with the Lahaina advisory team, the Red Cross, and other partners.
The wildfires in August marked the deadliest U.S. wildfire in over a century, claiming the lives of at least 99 people and destroying more than 2,000 buildings. West Maui, known for its tourism industry, contributes approximately 11,000 hotel rooms, accounting for half of Maui’s total. Due to the fire, travelers were forced to evacuate, leaving the hotels empty.
In an effort to revive the economy and create job opportunities, Hawaii Governor Josh Green previously declared that West Maui would begin reopening to tourism on October 8. However, Mayor Bissen has modified the reopening plan, opting for a phased approach. A small section on the northern edge of West Maui will open first, with the rest to follow later.
The decision to bring back tourists has sparked debate among locals. While some support the economic benefits, others argue that the region is not yet ready for visitors. In fact, a petition opposing the return of tourists has been drafted and signed by over 14,000 people. Despite this dissent, Mayor Bissen acknowledges the concerns but emphasizes that workers are ready to resume their jobs.
For those who are not prepared to return to work on November 1, Mayor Bissen encourages them to seek the necessary support and attention they need. Additionally, the mayor assures residents who have been temporarily staying in West Maui hotels that their housing will not be at risk, thanks to assistance from the Red Cross. Some properties have already reopened independently.
