House Republicans Scramble to Select New Speaker as Jim Jordan is Voted Out

House Republicans are facing the challenge of selecting a new candidate for speaker after Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, was voted out of the race. At least eight potential candidates have emerged to lead the House, with a closed-door House GOP vote on whether to keep Jordan as speaker designate scheduled. The Republican party is expected to hold a candidate forum on Monday evening, followed by a conference-wide election via secret anonymous ballot on Tuesday.

Among the contenders for the speaker position is Republican Study Committee Chair Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, who announced his bid on Friday. Hern emphasized the need for unity and a leader with a proven track record of success. Retired Marine Corps General Jack Bergman of Michigan has also officially entered the race, stating his commitment to coalescing the Republican party as a team.

Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, who was named by GOP lawmakers during Jordan’s bid, is also running for speaker. Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota and GOP Conference Vice Chair Mike Johnson of Louisiana are considering a run as well. Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia, who challenged Jordan in the last secret ballot for speaker, is back in the race, along with Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas.

Several other lawmakers are weighing their options and have until Sunday noon to enter the race before the candidate forum on Monday. Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington of Texas expressed serious consideration for a run, having received requests from fellow members to consider it.

The selection of a new House speaker holds significant implications for the Republican party and its leadership going forward. As the race unfolds, Republicans aim to find a leader who can unify the party and provide effective leadership in the conservative movement.
