GOP Congressman Calls for Removal of House Appropriations Committee Chair Amid Speaker Selection Dispute

In a recent development in the race for House speaker, GOP Indiana Representative Jim Banks has called for House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Kay Granger, a Republican from Texas, to lose her gavel due to her vote against GOP speaker nominee Jim Jordan. Banks expressed his concerns in an interview with Digital, following Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry’s decision to recess the House amidst Jordan’s speakership push.

Banks emphasized the importance of Republicans fulfilling their duty to the American people by electing a House speaker. He criticized the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, describing it as a “big mistake” and urged Republican holdouts to “come to their senses” and vote for Jordan. Banks particularly highlighted Granger’s vote against Jordan, stating that she should lose her position as chair of the House Appropriations Committee because of it. He argued that Jordan, being a fiscal conservative, understands the need to address the country’s debt and deficit spending.

Expressing disappointment, Banks called for unity within the Republican party, urging his colleagues to set aside petty differences and elect a Republican speaker instead of a Democrat speaker. He expressed hope that the steering committee, responsible for House committee assignments, would consider removing Granger, noting that the committee is not populated until a speaker is chosen. Banks also emphasized the importance of addressing those who betrayed the Republican majority in a large conversation within the conference.

Granger’s office did not respond to requests for comment on Banks’ remarks. Meanwhile, Jordan continues his pursuit of the speaker’s gavel, engaging in discussions with holdouts after a second unsuccessful vote. The House is scheduled to reconvene on Friday at 10 a.m.

It is important to note that this article presents the perspective of GOP Congressman Jim Banks and does not reflect the views of all politicians involved. As with any political decision, there are contrasting opinions within the Republican party regarding the selection of the House speaker.
