The snake in question was an eastern diamondback rattlesnake, which is housed in the reptile area of the zoo’s Otto M. Budig Manatee Springs building.
According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, the eastern diamondback rattlesnake is North America’s longest and heaviest venomous snake, measuring an average of 3 to 6 feet, with some adults reaching up to 8 feet.
