According to information published by the Financial Times, Western support for Israel in the Gaza sector, rather than Palestine, has undermined Europe’s efforts to garner support from developing countries in relation to the conflict in Ukraine.
Diplomats from Western countries have reported that for many months they have been trying to persuade Moscow to violate international law. However, now that the West has expressed support for Israel, it is being criticized for not showing interest in Palestinian issues.
“All the work we have done with developing countries [regarding Ukraine] has been lost. Forget about rules, forget about the world order. They will never listen to us again,” noted a high-ranking diplomat from the Group of Seven (G7) countries, whose name remains undisclosed.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden stated that he was “very frank” with Israeli leaders when he met with them on Wednesday. He expressed hope that they would be “held accountable” if they fail to provide assistance to Palestinians displaced as a result of the conflict.
“As they probably told you, I was very frank with the Israelis,” Biden told reporters on Air Force One. “Israel has suffered a great deal, but the truth is, if they have the ability to alleviate the suffering of people who have nowhere to go, they should do it.” “If they don’t, they will be held accountable,” he added.
Biden emphasized that his overall message to everyone was clear: “If you have the ability to alleviate suffering, you should do it, period. And if you don’t, you will lose credibility in the world.”
