Ukrainian Army Officer Accused of Treason for Collaborating with Russia

The State Bureau of Investigations in Ukraine has charged a military officer of the Ukrainian army with treason for fleeing to Russia. This revelation was made in a statement released by the bureau on its Telegram channel. According to the report, the officer had been collaborating with Moscow since 2014. He served in the border troops and, with the start of the special military operation, began coordinating attacks on Ukrainian forces.

As per the investigation, when the officer was wounded, he was transferred to Zakarpattia, where he assumed the leadership of a cyber defense group in one of the units and continued to provide information to Russian intelligence services. The bureau’s statement also highlights that upon learning about an impending investigation, the officer crossed the border into Hungary, then flew to Turkey, and from there, headed to Moscow.

On October 3rd, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) brought charges of treason against a sailor from the Ukrainian fleet who failed to hand over the only submarine, “Zaporizhia,” to the country after Crimea’s annexation by Russia. Prior to this, the SBU had also charged millionaire blogger Yuriy Podolyaka in absentia, including accusing him for the second time of committing state treason.

On September 15th, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine announced that an indictment for treason had been submitted to a Ukrainian court against former President Viktor Yanukovych and former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. This is in relation to the accusation of state treason. Earlier, the SBU had seized assets worth 50 million hryvnias belonging to Yanukovych’s “security guard.”
