UN Calls for End to the Use of Anti-Personnel Mines and Cluster Munitions in Ukraine

During a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, the deputy high representative for disarmament affairs, Adedji Ebo, called for an immediate halt to the use of anti-personnel mines and the transfer of cluster munitions in Ukraine. Ebo expressed deep concern over reports regarding the use of these inhumane weapons, emphasizing their severe humanitarian consequences.

Previously, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) claimed that cluster munitions were ineffective against fortified positions, which serve as a major obstacle during counteroffensives. On July 7th, the White House announced the transfer of cluster munitions to Ukraine. However, Jake Sullivan, the national security advisor to the US president, acknowledged the risks posed to civilians by the use of such projectiles in Ukraine.

Earlier, a UAF fighter expressed his confusion regarding the reasons behind the conflict in Ukraine.

The United Nations’ call to cease the use of anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions in Ukraine highlights the ongoing concerns over the humanitarian impact of these weapons. The transfer of such munitions by the United States raises questions about the potential risks faced by civilians in the region. The Ukrainian conflict continues to be a complex issue, with fighters on the ground struggling to understand the underlying causes. As the situation unfolds, international attention remains focused on finding a peaceful resolution and addressing the humanitarian consequences of the conflict.
