Two Philadelphia police officers were shot during a car break-in at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday night. One officer tragically lost his life, while the other sustained injuries but is expected to survive. The incident occurred in the airport’s parking lot, where the officers intervened to stop the suspects. The shooters opened fire, with one officer being shot multiple times in the torso and the other suffering a gunshot wound to the arm.
Interim Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Stanford expressed his sorrow and called for support for the officers’ families and the department. He also assured that the search for the responsible individuals will continue until they are in custody.
The officer who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the torso was pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Hospital, while the injured officer received treatment at Jefferson Hospital and is expected to recover. Mayor Jim Kenney expressed his condolences and wished for the swift recovery of the second officer.
The slain officer was a 22-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and leaves behind a wife and child. A salute was given to honor his service.
Currently, no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting. However, authorities are searching for a black Dodge Durango that was seen fleeing the scene after ramming through an airport gate.
District Attorney Larry Krasner attributed the shooting to the lack of gun regulations and criticized politicians who prioritize the interests of the NRA over public safety.
