In a surprising turn of events, Doug Skaff, a former Democratic leader in the West Virginia House of Delegates, has announced his intention to run for secretary of state next year, but this time as a Republican. Skaff, who registered as a pre-candidate for the office on Thursday, aims to bring a deep understanding of the law, strong leadership abilities, and a commitment to fairness, transparency, and integrity to the role.
By filing pre-candidacy papers, Skaff’s campaign can now begin fundraising and is required to file campaign finance reports. However, it is important to note that a candidate is not officially considered part of the race until they file a separate certificate of announcement and pay a filing fee. The official filing period for the 2024 election is scheduled for January.
Skaff’s decision to switch parties comes after his resignation from the West Virginia House of Delegates last month, where he had previously served as the chamber’s Democratic leader. While this move has raised eyebrows within the West Virginia Republican Party, its chairwoman, Elgine McArdle, expressed skepticism about Skaff’s announcement. She highlighted the challenge for Republican voters in differentiating between “philosophical nuances” and “diametric ideological opposition” that Skaff’s political history may present.
Skaff’s political career includes serving in the House from 2009 to 2014 and being re-elected to the chamber in 2018. Additionally, he currently holds the position of president at HD Media, which owns the Charleston Gazette-Mail and several other state newspapers.
The West Virginia Democratic Party chairman, Mike Pushkin, reacted to Skaff’s candidacy, expressing his belief that Skaff’s actual voting record may surprise Republican primary voters. Nevertheless, Pushkin wished him well in his endeavors.
