President Biden has condemned the “appalling” assault on Israel following Hamas terrorists infiltrating areas of the country and launching rocket barrages from the Gaza Strip. The president was recently interviewed voluntarily as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents. The interview, conducted over two days at the White House, was led by Special Counsel Robert Hur, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The White House Counsel’s Office spokesperson, Ian Sams, stated that the president and the White House are fully cooperating with the investigation. Sams also emphasized the importance of transparency while protecting the integrity of the ongoing probe. Questions regarding the investigation were referred to the Justice Department.
It is worth noting that this interview occurred amidst the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East. President Biden was simultaneously engaged in discussions with foreign leaders and his national security team regarding the crisis.
The investigation originated from a discovery made by President Biden’s personal attorneys at the Penn Biden Center. While preparing to vacate office space in November 2022, a “small number of documents with classified markings” were found in a locked closet. The National Archives were promptly notified and took possession of the documents.
In comparison to past investigations involving high-ranking officials, such as President Donald Trump and President Bill Clinton, who either submitted written answers or underwent hours of questioning, respectively, President Biden’s voluntary interview stands as a significant step in the investigation process.
