Two elderly individuals have tragically lost their lives in a home in northwestern Indiana due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities believe that bird nests obstructing an air exhaust pipe led to the buildup of the toxic gas, resulting in the fatalities. The incident came to light when a relative discovered the unconscious residents and promptly called 911 on Sunday morning in Merrillville. Upon arrival, emergency responders detected alarmingly high levels of carbon monoxide within the house, leading them to believe that the victims died from exposure to the lethal gas.
Merrillville Fire Chief Ed Yerga stated on Monday that an initial investigation revealed the presence of bird nests clogging the home’s boiler flue. This exhaust pipe, connected to the natural gas-fueled heating system, was found to be the cause of the fatal carbon monoxide levels. Carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas, is produced through combustion and can be found in various sources such as vehicle emissions, generators, gas ranges, and heating systems.
The identities and ages of the deceased individuals were not immediately available, and autopsies are scheduled to be conducted by the Lake County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday. In response to this tragedy, the Merrillville Fire Department has emphasized the importance of having functioning carbon monoxide and smoke detectors installed in homes. They also advised residents to have their heating systems inspected at least once a year.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the silent danger posed by carbon monoxide. It is crucial for individuals to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their loved ones from this toxic gas.
