Columbia University Faces Lawsuit for Alleged Cover-Up of Sexual Abuse by Former OB-GYN

A new lawsuit has been filed against Columbia University and the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), accusing them of covering up years of sexual abuse by former OB-GYN Dr. Robert Hadden. More than 300 women have come forward with allegations against Hadden, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison earlier this year for assaulting dozens of patients. The lawsuit claims that Columbia University had knowledge of Hadden’s actions and failed to take appropriate action.

The lawsuit, filed under the Adult Survivors Act, highlights the pain and betrayal caused by Columbia University, its administration, and its trustees. Attorney Anthony T. DiPietro, who filed the lawsuit, emphasizes that institutions like Columbia University are often aware of serial sexual predators within their ranks. He believes that there are women who have been carrying the burden of abuse for years, blaming themselves for what happened to them.

According to the lawsuit, Columbia University waited months before notifying patients about Hadden’s departure from the hospital, and even then, the reason for his departure was omitted. The university is accused of intentionally covering up Hadden’s actions. However, a CUIMC spokesperson expressed deep regret for the pain caused by Hadden and stated that the institution has taken steps to revise policies and improve patient safety.

The lawsuit also alleges that Columbia University coordinated a long-term cover-up of Hadden’s abuse, deceiving patients and the public into believing that he had done nothing wrong. It accuses the university of allowing Hadden to return to their medical clinic after learning about the abuse, enabling him to continue his pattern of sexual abuse.

The lawsuit is still in its early stages, and Columbia University will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations in court. At this time, no findings of liability have been made. The university’s president and CUIMC CEO have commended the women who came forward against Hadden and expressed a commitment to enhancing policies and processes to ensure patient safety.

This case raises serious concerns about the handling of sexual abuse allegations within academic institutions. It highlights the need for greater accountability and transparency to protect victims and prevent future instances of abuse. The lawsuit against Columbia University serves as a reminder that institutions must prioritize the safety and well-being of their patients above all else.
