Michigan Man Charged with Child Abuse After 8-Year-Old Son Accidentally Shoots Himself

Police are currently searching for suspects in a tragic shooting incident that took place in Michigan. A Michigan man, Kayvon Barrett, has been charged with child abuse after his 8-year-old son allegedly found his unsecured gun in their home and accidentally shot himself in the head. The incident has raised concerns about gun safety and the responsibility of adults in the household.

During the court proceedings on Friday, state 36th District Court Magistrate Malaika Ramsey-Heath revealed that Kayvon Barrett waited 10 minutes before calling 911 after the shooting occurred at their Detroit home. Ramsey-Heath stated that “calls to 911 were delayed by 10 minutes” and expressed disappointment in the adults’ lack of concern for the child’s well-being. The boy’s mother reportedly urged Barrett to call 911, indicating that the adults were more focused on their own problems.

Kayvon Barrett now faces four counts of second-degree child abuse in connection with the incident. The prosecutor expressed frustration with the lack of vigilance in the household, stating, “I honestly blame everyone in this house for not being more observant of weapons that could hurt children.” The prosecutor also revealed that Child Protective Services had visited Barrett multiple times over the past five years due to findings of physical neglect and abuse.

The injured boy underwent surgery following the shooting and is currently in critical condition. The court magistrate noted that Barrett’s history with Child Protective Services raises concerns about his ability to ensure the safety of his children. Other children were present in the home at the time of the incident, according to reports from prosecutors.

Barrett’s attorney argued that further investigation is necessary and suggested that more than one adult in the household may have had access to firearms at the time of the shooting. While the investigation continues, Barrett’s bond has been set at $100,000. If he manages to post bail, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor and will not be allowed to have contact with children.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of gun safety and responsible firearm storage, particularly in homes with children. The case also raises questions about the role of Child Protective Services in monitoring potentially dangerous situations. As the injured child fights for his life, authorities will continue their investigation to determine the full extent of the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.
