Investigation Underway after Woman Found Dead on Rail Trail in Vermont

Authorities in Vermont are conducting a search for a suspect in connection with the “suspicious death” of a woman found on the Rail Trail in Castleton. Vermont State Police responded to a call reporting a dead woman in the area and located her on Thursday. The witness reported hearing gunshots and described a possible suspect walking northbound on the trail. The suspect, described as a White male, is considered to be “armed and dangerous,” and the community has been urged to remain vigilant. Students on campus were advised to stay indoors for safety.

The Town of Castleton has provided updates on social media, informing residents and students about the ongoing investigation. They have advised people to be aware of their surroundings, keep doors and vehicles locked, and avoid leaving keys in vehicles. South Street and the Rail Trail have been closed to travel. The community has been encouraged to check in on friends and family in the area and use the buddy system when entering buildings or outbuildings.

The Vermont State Police are leading the investigation, with multiple agencies involved, including the Major Crime Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigations, and Castleton Police Department. The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Castleton, a small town of approximately 4,500 residents, is located near the Vermont-New York border. The Rail Trail, a popular recreational trail, is open to pedestrians, bicyclists, and other seasonal activities.

As this is a developing story, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
