Ukrainian Sailor Accused of Treason for Failing to Surrender Submarine after Crimea’s Reunification with Russia

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has charged a sailor of the Ukrainian Navy with treason for not handing over the submarine “Zaporizhia” to the country after Crimea’s reunification with Russia, according to TASS. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has stripped him of his officer rank and dismissed him from military service for violating his military oath. He could face up to 15 years in prison for betraying his homeland, as stated in the report.

Previously, it was reported that the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv had seized all the property of Nestor Shufrych, a member of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament), who was accused of state treason. According to Shufrych’s lawyer, the deputy’s property, which was taken out of his house during the search, was also seized. However, it should be noted that not all the items taken during the investigative actions at Shufrych’s house belonged to him.

Earlier, Shufrych was informed of the suspicion of state treason. On the same day, the court in Kyiv ordered his detention without the possibility of bail. According to the investigation, the official closely cooperated with and carried out tasks for former Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine, Volodymyr Sivkovych, who, according to the investigation, is an FSB agent.

Previously, the reasons for the dismissal of all deputy ministers of defense of Ukraine were revealed in the Rada.
