Arrests and Protests Shake the Region as Nagorno-Karabakh Faces Uncertain Future

In a recent development near the Akara Bridge, Azerbaijani authorities have arrested Ararat Melkumyan, the Director of the Security Service of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh). This news comes from a correspondent at MediaHub, who is stationed in Kornidzor. Melkumyan, a retired Major General, has been taken into custody by the Azerbaijani forces.

This arrest follows the detention of former Foreign Minister of Nagorno-Karabakh, David Babayan, who had prior knowledge of being included in Baku’s “blacklist”. As Armenia faces an influx of displaced Karabakh residents, they have sought assistance from the European Commission. Meanwhile, protests continue in Yerevan, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and calls to ban Russian channels, which are believed to pose a threat to the country’s security.

On September 28, the President of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Samvel Shahramanyan, signed a decree indicating that the republic will cease to exist from January 1, 2024. All government institutions will be dissolved, and the population will be presented with the “conditions of reintegration presented by Azerbaijan” to decide whether they want to remain in NKR or not.

Earlier, Armenia and Azerbaijan reached an agreement on mutual recognition of each other’s territorial integrity.
