Georgia Strengthens Military Capabilities Amidst Threats in Abkhazia

Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic, Sergei Shamba, stated in an interview with RIA Novosti that the republic has been recently focused on strengthening its military capabilities due to the threat posed by destructive forces in Georgia. The opposition in Georgia, during recent protests, demanded the “return of Abkhazia” among other grievances. On Saturday, September 30th, Abkhazia will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its victory in the Georgian-Abkhaz war and its independence.

According to Shamba, some Georgian leaders have the fantasy that they can resolve the issue of Abkhazia’s return by force. He emphasized that if approached pragmatically, it is evident what will happen to Georgia. While it will not be pleasant for them, it will be even worse. Therefore, there should be an understanding of reality in this matter. Shamba also mentioned that Abkhazia has been strengthening its military capabilities recently.

Previously, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, noted the historical closeness between the peoples of Georgia, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia. He expressed hope for a pragmatic solution from Tbilisi regarding the two republics, whose independence Moscow recognized 15 years ago.

It was recently revealed that Georgia has officially refused to sign an agreement with Abkhazia on the non-use of force. Earlier, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili suggested including the withdrawal of Russian military forces from South Ossetia and Abkhazia in a proposed future peace agreement with Ukraine.
