The Russian Defense Ministry has reported that armed formations located in the territory of Karabakh have surrendered approximately three million ammunition. This significant development comes as tensions in the region continue to escalate. According to the ministry, the surrendered items include 16 units of armored vehicles, 21 units of automotive equipment, seven units of air defense systems, 48 units of field artillery, multiple rocket launch systems, mortars, over 4,800 units of small arms, anti-tank weapons, and portable anti-aircraft missile systems.
Earlier, the head of Nagorno-Karabakh, Samvel Shahramanyan, issued a decree announcing the cessation of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh’s existence. The decision was made in light of the complex military and political situation and prioritizing the safety of the people, as well as the agreements reached with the assistance of Russian peacekeepers and Baku. As per the decree, Karabakh residents, including the military personnel who have surrendered their weapons, will be able to leave the republic freely through the Lachin corridor.
On September 19, the Azerbaijani authorities declared a localized operation in Karabakh. Baku’s objective for the operation is to prevent “large-scale provocations,” disarm and withdraw Armenian army units from the region. In response to the escalating conflict, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MID) has called upon Armenia and Azerbaijan to return to diplomatic negotiations for a peaceful resolution in the Nagorno-Karabakh situation.
This latest development, indicating the surrender of armed formations and the handover of a significant number of weapons, is expected to have a major impact on the ongoing conflict in Karabakh.
