It is expected that Republicans on the committee will grill Garland on these matters. In the document, Garland claims that his mission as Attorney General was to uphold the norms that have guided the Justice Department for decades. He highlights the importance of independence from partisan influence, strict regulation of communications with the White House, and guidelines for FBI investigations. The document also boasts about the DOJ’s efforts to protect democracy, build trust with law enforcement, and combat various types of crime. However, Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, has titled the hearing “Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice” and intends to examine how the DOJ has become politicized and weaponized under Garland’s leadership. The committee has been investigating allegations of politicization throughout the Biden administration, including claims that the Hunter Biden investigation was influenced by politics. IRS whistleblowers have testified before Congress, alleging that prosecutorial decisions in the investigation were politically motivated. They claim that David Weiss, the U.S. attorney for Delaware who led the investigation, requested special counsel and charging authority but was denied by the main DOJ.
