Roosevelt Island: Turkey’s Safe Haven with New “Turkey Crossing” Signs

Roosevelt Island, a neighborhood in New York City, is set to become the first in the city to put up “Turkey Crossing” signs in order to protect a rare bird that has recently made the area her home. The bright yellow placards will warn drivers to look out for Rosie, a wild turkey who was first spotted strutting on the island off the East River in May. A concerned neighbor dropped off two of such signs at the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation office, which will be erected at some of Rosie’s hangout spots in the next few days.

Locals have been crowing about Rosie since she appeared on the island in mid-May after making the journey from Long Island City. However, they are worried that her lack of a sense of direction could lead to accidents with cars and mopeds. The RIOC is hoping that the addition of “Turkey Crossing” signs throughout the 2-mile community will help avoid any turkey tragedies.
