Debate Fact-Checking: Balancing Act or Bias

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, ABC News anchor Linsey Davis admitted that her fact-checking during the debate was influenced by the earlier CNN debate between Trump and President Biden which went poorly for the latter. Davis sought to address concerns that Trump’s statements might be left hanging without opposition from his opponent or the moderators as happened in June during the Trump-Biden debate on CNN. The Los Angeles Times praised Davis, calling her a “rising star” who “held Trump’s feet to the fire.” However, both Muir and Davis have been criticized for appearing biased towards Vice President Kamala Harris after fact-checking Trump five times but failing to correct any of Harris’ statements. Despite this, Davis insisted that she and co-moderator David Muir were prepared to counter the candidates’ most egregious statements by studying hours of campaign rallies and interviews before the debate at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center. Critics have accused Davis of helping Kamala Harris, but she dismissed these claims as a “stereotype” and has since shut off her social media accounts.
