Renowned legal scholar Alan Dershowitz has announced his departure from the Democratic Party due to being “disgusted” by what he witnessed at last month’s Democratic National Convention. The retired Harvard Law School professor, who is a longtime self-described liberal Democrat, shared his thoughts on the Chicago gathering with radio host Zev Brenner on August 23rd, stating it was “the worst convention in American history” due to the number of speakers who have publicly expressed opposition to Israel.
During his appearance on “Talkline with Zev Brenner,” Dershowitz criticized a variety of speakers for their anti-Zionist rhetoric, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders. He argued that the Democratic Party gave anti-Israel arguments legitimacy by allowing those who espouse them to speak at the convention.
They had more anti-Jewish, anti-Zionist people who were speaking, starting with AOC – a miserable, anti-Zionist bigot,” Dershowitz said. Then of course they had Elizabeth Warren, who is one of the most anti-Jewish people in the Senate.
Dershowitz continued to express his discontent, stating that he felt “absolutely disgusted” by the convention and no longer considers himself a Democrat but rather an independent. However, he remains undecided on who he will vote for on Election Day, as he plans to make his decision at the last minute based on various factors, such as each candidate’s stance on Iran and their support for Israel.
Although Dershowitz faced criticism from the left for defending former President Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial, he has gradually been moving away from the Democratic Party over time. His decision to leave the party was solidified by the events at the Democratic National Convention, where speakers who share anti-Israel views were given a platform and their arguments deemed legitimate by the party.
I cannot be associated with the party that features as its speakers, AOC, Al Sharpton, Liz Warren and Bernie Sanders,” he said. That’s not my party.
