Former prison guard lover of Susan Smith, a mother serving a life sentence for the drowning deaths of her two young sons, does not believe she should be released on parole. Speaking in an interview with NewsNation’s Ashleigh Banfield, Alfred Rowe claimed that the 52-year-old woman has not really learned anything from her three decades of incarceration and only learned how to become a better criminal behind bars.
Susan Smith, who is currently serving life in South Carolina for the deaths of Michael, aged 3, and 14-month-old Alexander whom she left strapped in their car seats before driving her vehicle into John D. Long Lake in Union County, became parole-eligible this year and could potentially be released within a matter of months. Her first parole hearing is set to take place on November 4th.
Rowe, who had an affair with Smith while she was an inmate and consequently lost his job, told Banfield that he believes Susan will likely re-offend and violate her parole. Rowe explained that if Susan were released, she would likely be unable to abstain from drugs and alcohol which would likely be a condition of her parole. He also pointed out the possibility that she may return to strip clubs, which would also be a violation.
Alfred Rowe pleaded guilty in 2001 to having sex with Susan Smith while she was an inmate at Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina, where she has been incarcerated for more than two decades. Rowe told Banfield that he does not know how he allowed the affair to happen and attributed his actions to being young and naive at the time.
Relatives of Susan Smith have revealed that she has expressed her belief that she deserves her freedom after 30 years in prison. The Post previously reported that she had reached out to her ex-husband, David, to see if he would support her bid for parole. However, it has been confirmed that he will “100% oppose” her release from prison when given the opportunity to speak at the November hearing.
