Chicago’s Weekend Violence Leaves at Least 20 People Shot.
At least 20 people were injured in a series of shootings across the city of Chicago during the past weekend. One person was fatally shot just blocks away from the site where the Democratic National Convention (DNC) is set to take place on Monday, with Kamala Harris expected to be nominated for the Democratic presidential ticket at the United Center.
The violence began shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday when a 21-year-old man was involved in a car accident with a black truck on the 500-block of Damen Avenue, located less than a mile north of the United Center. The driver of the truck allegedly opened fire on the 21-year-old, striking him in the head, cheek, and shoulder before fleeing the scene. The victim was left in critical condition, with no suspects identified at this time.
In another incident on Sunday, a man and a woman were found shot dead inside a car on Chicago’s Lower West Side. Police officers responding to the sound of gunshots encountered an armed group near the vehicle and opened fire on them, striking one who later succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital.
Saturday saw two additional shootings in different parts of the city. A man and woman were struck by bullets while standing outside just before 5 a.m., with the man suffering fatal injuries after being hit in the abdomen. The woman was also injured, sustaining a gunshot wound to her ankle. A third victim, a 33-year-old man, was struck in the foot during this incident.
Later on Saturday, a 30-year-old man was killed after being shot in the neck and back by another individual who then fled the scene.
Despite these shootings, Chicago experienced a relatively quieter weekend compared to previous ones. For example, over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, at least 109 people were shot, with 19 of those victims losing their lives. During the weekends prior, there were incidents where 33 and 48 people were shot, respectively, resulting in one and five deaths, respectively.
